Let's Use ALL the Sciences of Reading...
A Centrists' Perspective of the Reading Evolution
In this presentation, Dr. Sam Bommarito, (@doctorsam7) will talk about what looking at ALL the research can do to inform our teaching. Let’s stop weaponizing research and instead ask educators to consider ALL sides and ALL research as they try to help children become lifelong readers and writers. Dr. Sam will include some hands-on activities, so please bring notebooks and your ideas about best practices and materials. There will be many different activities and discussions about how to scaffold students in decoding and understanding text. Some of these activities may challenge some of your current practices, and some may reinforce them.
Dr. Sam Bommarito is an educator with 50 years of teaching experience in Title 1 buildings with many at-risk children. Early in his career, he participated in several highly successful Title 1 projects and has taught every grade from Kindergarten to graduate school, including teaching university-level reading courses for teachers. Over the past four years, he has taken a centrist position in the current iteration of the reading wars. See Dr. Sam Bommarito’s blog @doctorsam7 or his Facebook page to learn more!
